NJ Assembly Unanimously Passes Bill Requiring Public Hearings Before Beachfills

By a vote of 80 to 0, the NJ Assembly unanimously passed a bill that
would require a public hearing before any beach replenishment project goes forward. The bill, which passed the full Senate already, now moves to the Governor’s desk for signature.

This is another step in the right direction to help make our opinions of beach replenishment known. We need to start being proactive instead of reactive when it comes to preserving our beaches. Keep off the dunes and volunteer to plant dune grass whenever you see an opportunity.

First Board

My first board. I shaped and glassed it myself last year with much advise from Swaylocks. It was a great experience and its gotten me hooked. I now try to shape 2 or 3 boards a month if I can find the time. I would recommend every surfer try to shape a board once in their life.

I find you notice every little thing about a wave when you ride your own equipment. You are focusing so much on the details of your shape and trying to think of ways to improve it. It makes you super aware. I never felt that feeling riding a off the rack board, or even a custom shaped by someone else. If you try it you will see what I mean.

Summertime

Now that its January and the water is cold I've started going through some summertime pictures to remind me how nice the water was just a few months ago. I have to say, out of all the pictures I have from the past summer this picture is one of my favorites. The waves weren't remarkable, it wasn't the best beach day of the year, but I do specifically remember my daughter asking me to take her to the beach. It wasn't as if she hasn't done that before or since, but when I saw this picture its was the first memory about that afternoon that popped in my head. Children change everything. They grow up fast, don't ever say no to them when they want to spend time with you.

An unmemorable wave on a memorable afternoon.

5'8" Quad Fish

5'8" Canard Fish that I shaped earlier in the year. I'll be sure to bring it to the NJ Fish Fry!!

I didn't have much free time this weekend, but I did get the fins glassed on on the Bonzer I've been working on. So, a little sanding around the fins and it will be ready for the hotcoat. I'm going to try the Resin-X 'Fast' formula for the hotcoat instead of the 'Slow' I've been using to laminate. Big thanks to Matt @ 3CD for the tips and help. I'm loving the Resin-X.

Bonzer 3 Progress

Tacked the 101 Fin Co Bamboo fins on tonight. Its supposed to warm up a lot over the next few days, up to around 60 degrees or so. I should be able to finish the board this weekend if time allows. All we need now are waves, its been flat.

Is it 1982 again?

Not exactly as I planned, but still pretty cool. 6'1" epoxy quad with a crazy resin tint. Doesn't surf too bad either.

Fins, Fins, Fins

My Bonzer center fin came today to compliment my siderunners. 101 Fin Co makes some beautiful fins from all types of wood. Check them out at 101fins.com when you have a chance. I'm going to hotcoat my bonzer as soon as its warms up a bit here, its currently 25 degrees outside now and my heater has a struggle to get above 55 in the old shaping bay right now. Not ideal temps to hotcoat in.
